Even President Obama’s been trying to kick the habit. And for good reason: Every year 500,000 people die from tobacco-related illnesses. Here are 12 reasons to stop right now. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act gives the FDA unprecedented authority to lower the amount of nicotine in cigarettes and ban misleading labels on packs such as “low-tar” and “light.” The law also prohibits flavors that appeal to kids as well as advertising campaigns that target them. Obama has been trying to quit to fulfill a campaign promise to his wife, Michelle. Although he said he’s “95% cured,” the president recently admitted he’s fallen off the wagon a few times and that he “constantly struggles” with the desire to puff. Like 90% of all smokers, he picked up his first cigarette before he was 18.“I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it has been with you for a long time,” Obama said at a press conference.
