Eggs Are Not Dairy!
On Friday night, two friends took me to O-Ya for a lovely Japanese birthday dinner in Boston. None of the three of us were eating meat, since my two friends are vegetarians (who eat eggs and drink milk) and I am still on my pescatarian dairy-free kick (or what I like to call “torture”), SO we opted to splurge on the tasting menu, which would be customized to fit our dietary needs. The menu consisted of sixteen dishes, or “bites,” and each item had us wishing it was more than just one bite of each. Most of the dishes I ate were fish-based, and all were delicious buttery goodness. Mushrooms also played a major role in making this meal tasty and memorable. The overall presentation of each dish was delicate and unique; it was obvious that each piece of food had been carefully placed. Then came dish #14, which was basically a poached egg. Clearly, this raised an important question for us vegetarian-pescatarians: Are eggs considered to be dairy? I was convinced that they were because I always find them in the dairy aisle (I know, silly reason), but my two friends insisted eggs are not dairy. That was reason enough, so we all went ahead and devoured the egg dish that had been placed before me. After a little research online, I’ve learned that eggs are not considered dairy, but are considered an animal byproduct.
